During Super Bowl LIX in February 2025, Marvel Studios unveiled a new trailer for their upcoming film, “Thunderbolts*,” scheduled for release on May 2, 2025. The film features a team of antiheroes, including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), assembled by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) to confront a formidable new threat. The trailer hints at the team facing off against the Void, the malevolent alter-ego of Bob/Sentry, portrayed by Lewis Pullman. Notably, the film’s title includes an asterisk, “Thunderbolts*,” a detail that has sparked speculation among fans and is expected to be explained after the film’s release.
In the trailer, Red Guardian expresses hope that the team’s achievements will earn them a spot on the cover of Wheaties, a cereal known for featuring sports figures and the slogan “The Breakfast of Champions.” Marvel released a poster mimicking a Wheaties box, featuring the team and captioned “The Breakfast of Champions Thunderbolts*.” An international poster includes a footnote for the asterisk, stating, “The Avengers Are Not Available,” suggesting the Thunderbolts* are stepping in due to the Avengers’ absence.
